I have recently been conspiring with a friend of mine to embark on a grueling, several month long journey through the long halls of great cinema. We’re currently making a meticulous effort to compile a shitload of short lists comprising movies to be watched in a single 1-2 week period, each based on a particular theme (eg. Golden Age of American Cinema, Classic Pre-Slasher Horrors, War Movies), actor (Al Pacino, Edward Norton, Joseph Gordon Levitt), or crew member (Federico Fellini, Coen Brothers, Alfred Hitchcock). If successful, it will take up an unreasonable amont of our time and be more exhausting than it is enlightening by the end of it all. I’ll let you know how it goes.
In honor of this and other painstaking bouts of cinephilia everywhere, I want to share with you the greatest list of the greatest movies of all time of all time.
Empire’s 500 Greatest Movies of All Time

Empire Magazine’s mammoth 500 title review of the greatest cinema on the planet is not only the most beautifully presented list I’ve come across, it’s also the most extensive, exhaustive, broad, modern, inclusive, fair and well-balanced. I personally guarantee you that you will find some favorites here. Aside from all that, it’s just a joy to flip through. It’s a must-see for movie lovers.
